LicensePlateInfo.com's License Plates For Sale:

Texas

Last updated May 4, 2024

Keep in mind:

The photographs below are only meant to show the design of the plates that are for sale. They are not intended to show the condition of the plates. The plates shown in the photographs may or may not be a photo of the actual plate that is for sale!! If a plate number is listed in the description then the picture shown is the actual plate for sale. Otherwise the plate(s) for sale will be the same design but may have a different plate number.

To see an explanation of grading terms used go to the page on license plate grading terms. This page includes links to several other pages with photographic examples of each grading term most license plate collectors use.

This list is divided into four parts. The first section lists singles of ordinary passenger car plates. Below the single passenger section are pairs of ordinary passenger plates. Next is a section showing all years of unissued validation stickers that I have available (both license plate stickers and windshield stickers). All stickers were never issued. The last section lists non-passenger or specialty plates (such as truck, trailer, motorcycle, government, environmental, college, etc.).

This is a hobby to me, not a business. I don't have online ordering or checkout. If you are interested in anything e-mail me at

For other jurisdictions of the United States or Canada, follow this link.

Texas Passenger-Car Plates (Singles):     (single plates are not registerable under Texas' Year-of-Manufacture Law)
Texas 1925

1925 repaint (# 183*076, Dallas County) $18
Texas 1942

1942 fair (# F94*640, Nolan County) $5
The 1942 plates were used through 1944, being validated for 1943 and 1944 with a small metal date tab attached to the plate.

Texas 1949 1949 aluminum, repaint (# EU 5455, Grayson County) $8

Texas normally made plates out of steel until the 2000s but in some years during the 1940s and 1950s a small number of plates were made of aluminum.

Aluminums are known for 1946, 1947, 1949, 1953 and 1954 with the most common year being 1954.

Whoever repainted this did not know what they were doing. They gave it a painted border which the 1949 plates did not have. They also repainted it the wrong colors. The background should be what the state called "gold" (a light orange), not yellow.

Beginning in 1994 (for registrations expiring in 1995) Texas began issuing a windshield sticker to validate most types of plates rather than a plate sticker. Because of this all passenger and truck plates issued since then have no plate stickers. However since Texas assigns plates to the counties in numerical order the year of issue can generally be determined within a year or two by the plate number. For undated passenger and truck plates validated by a windshield sticker I have noted the most likely year of issue.

2010s:
NOTE! ~ The scotchlite reflective material used on Texas' flat plates until about 2022 had a tendancy to discolor very quickly. Many flat plates began to develop greyness or grey streaks within a few months of use. On some of these plates the streaking made the entire background look various shades of grey. I grade plates that are showing this greying or streaking lower than plates without the greying or streaking. Because of this some photos here may look okay but when the plate is held in one's hand will look not so good due to the discoloration or streaking.

Texas 1962

Take note!   Texas has what is commonly called a Year-of-Manufacture Law (YOM). This allows vehicles that are 25 years old or older to be legally registered with a pair of plates from the vehicle's model year.

However from 2004 to 2009 Texas issued passenger plates in the same numbering formats used from 1965 to 1990. Most of these 2004/2009 plates have fallen out of use by now but many of them still show up in the state's computer system even though they may have been expired for many years.

Some county tax offices will not register a pair of 1965/1990 plates if a record with the same number from the 2004/2009 series of plates shows up in the computer system. So before inquiring about a pair of 1965/1990 plates I have, be sure to check with your local county tax assessor-collector's office to make sure they will register them. The state's policy is that 1965/1990 plates should be registerable, however it seems to be at the whim of the clerk at the local county tax office, so be sure to check with your county first!

   Disabled Veteran:
Take note! Disabled veteran plates have never used the same year stickers as ordinary passenger, truck and most other types of plates. Prior to the mid-1990s disabled veteran plates were validated with a specal year sticker with the letters "DV" on it.

Note that any of the disabled veteran plates I offer here have the proper "DV" sticker.

Most disabled veteran plates you see are front plates that someone slapped a regular year sticker onto, not realizing that after 1976 a few types of plates used special year stickers with the classification on them.

The 1984 sticker has deteriorated making it mostly translucent. If you're brave you could try peeling it off to expose either the 1983, 1982 or 1981 stickers underneath but those might also have deteriorated. If you do this be careful, since POW plates have always used a special year sticker with "POW", similar to disabled vet plates.
POW plates were first issued in 1980, expiring March 1981, so this is a first-issue plate.

Texas trailer error undated (circa 1980) trailer error plate, mint (# 58S*424) $5

Trailer plates at this time were numbered with one letter and up to five numbers. However this plate was mistakenly made with the letter "S" in the wrong position. The number should have been S58*424, not 58S*424. Plates numbered with two numbers, the letter "S" and three more numbers were from the soil conservation classification, not trailer.

10-18 Trailer:  (10-18 Trailer plates were used on semi-trailers with a carrying capacity over 10,000 but not over 18,000 pounds. The type was merged into token trailer in 1972.)

Texas did have replacement plates for some truck and trailer types from 1955 through 1974. They were always colored differently than the standard plates and were numbered at the very end of the allotted numbering block for their respective types.

Texas 1974 token trailer Very rare late-manufacture 1974 token trailer, vvg (# Z39*685) $100

In 1975 Texas introduced multi-year plates, validated by stickers from 1976 onwards. To make room for the sticker boxes on the 1975 plates the classification on non-passenger plates was moved from the bottom of the plates to the top and placed just under the state name.

During 1974, after the manufacturing equipment was retooled and the 1975 plates had begun to be made, more 1974 token trailer plates were needed. Rather than retool the equipment again to make plates look like other 1974 plates, they just took out the sticker box dies and put in the "19" and "74" dies.

Token trailer plates in this design are exceedingly rare. I have been a license plate hobbiest in Texas since the early 1970s and did not know this variety existed until I stumbled across a few of them in a Houston antique mall in 1996. These are the only token trailer plates in this design that I have ever seen.

To the best of my knowledge only truck and token trailer were made in this late-manufacture design.

Truck:  (The "truck" classification was discontinued in late 2012.)

Tow Truck:  (Tow Truck plates were first issued in 1988 (expire-1989) as a small-sized plate which was used as a supplemental plate alongside the wrecker's regular truck plates.
In 1998 (for expire-1999 registrations) these small plates were discontinued when full-sized "tow truck" plates were issued to replace the wrecker's regular truck plates.
In spite of having sticker boxes, the full-sized tow truck plates never used plate stickers.)
Texas 1988 tow truck 1988 tow truck, vg (# 145*30W) $35

Texas planned on introducing tow truck plates in 1987 (expiring in January 1988). However there was a dispute about whether they would be used alongside the wrecker's regular truck plate or in place of it.

As a result the full-size expire-1988 tow truck plates which had been manufactured were never issued.

The first tow truck plates that were issued were the small-sized expire-1989 plates (which were issued as singles and used alongside the wrecker's regular truck plate).
