United States & Canada

Last updated December 4, 2021

Keep in mind:

The photographs below are only meant to show the design of the plates that are for sale. They are not intended to show the condition of the plates. The plates shown in the photographs may or may not be a photo of the actual plate that is for sale!! If a plate number is listed in the description then the picture shown is the actual plate for sale. Otherwise the plate(s) for sale will be the same design but may have a different plate number.

To see an explanation of grading terms used go to the page on license plate grading terms. This page includes links to several other pages with photographic examples of each grading term most license plate collectors use.

This page is divided into two basic sections. The top section lists plates from the 13 jurisdictions of Canada in alphabetical order (if I have any). Below the section on Canada are plates from the 51 jurisdictions of the United States in alphabetical order (including the District of Columbia). For each jurisdiction ordinary standard-issue plates for privately-owned passenger cars are listed first, then non-passenger or specialty plates (such as truck, trailer, taxi, environmental, college, etc.). If nothing is listed from a place you're looking for that means I don't have a plate from there. If a particular state or section gets too long I may break it off onto a separate page. In such cases a link will be shown where that jurisdiction would normally fall.

This is a hobby to me, not a business. I don't have online ordering or checkout. If you are interested in anything e-mail me at

For jurisdictions outside the United States or Canada, follow this link.

The spread was October 1990 through September 1991, so most plates jumped from displaying the green MAR 90 sticker to displaying a 1991 sticker. Only about 25% of plates were issued a late-1990 expiration, making 1990 staggered-monthly expirations uncommon.

The spread was from July 1990 through May 1991 so only about 55% of vehicles recieved a non-March 1990 expiration when the staggered-monthly system was introduced. Connecticut 2013

2013 issue, vvg (# 8 ADAF 2) $10
In 2013 Connecticut began issuing plates in this numbering pattern but they were so hard to read that a dot separator was later added in the middle. Plates without the dot separator were issued only for abut six months, from the AAAA letter combination through AGGX.

 Delaware ~ ~
Delaware 1999

1999 vg (# 71233) $5

In late 2005 Delaware began issuing plate stickers which were printed on demand in the registration office when a plate is issued rather than pre-manufactured stickers. These are sometimes called "smart" stickers because the sticker's serial number is the plate number. The ink used on these black-on-white stickers scratches or rubs off very easily so it can be difficult to find a recent Delaware plate with good ink on the plate's sticker.

(# 1193, Cobb County)
$120
The optional bicentennial base was issued from 1976 to 1982. They are very difficult to find with decent scotchlite. The county sticker was not affixed to most bicentennial plates.

Georgia 1997 1997 on backdated 1998 base, vvg (# 259 KNF, Chatham County) $10

Georgia introduced staggered-monthly registration in 1997 and had a general reissue of plates at that time. Their new plates had a screened "98" in the lower-right corner. All renewals from 1996 recieved this new plate with a month sticker indicating when their plate expired in 1998.

Georgia also has an ad valorem tax which is paid when a registration is purchased. During 1997 when a new vehicle was purchased the purchaser had the option of paying this ad valorem tax only through the registrants assigned month of expiration. In such cases the plate issued shows the month through which the tax had been paid.

This created an unusual variety in Georgia plates, a plate expiring in 1997.

 Idaho ~ ~
Idaho 1987 1987 with squashed county code, vg (# 8B G 5964, Bonneville County) $7

In 1985 Idaho redesigned their plates to add stylized mountains and a horizontal line across the top of the plate. This horizontal line caused the county code to have to be made smaller, making it more difficult to read. This apparently was not popular and the folowing year the plate was again redesigned to allow the previous, larger county code to be reinstated.

Kansas 1988 1989 base backdated to 1988, vg (# BMP 598, Sedgwick County) $5

In Kansas the month of expiration is based on the first letter of the vehicle owner's last name.
When a new plate design is phased-in some newly-registered vehicles will get plates which expire in only a few months. In some cases this might be in the same year that the plates are issued so will have the current year.
In 1988, as a new plate was being phased in for 1989 expirations, some 1989 plates were issued with 1988 stickers.

While not terribly rare, these backdated plates are not common either.

 Kentucky ~ ~
Kentucky 1998 1998 plain base, exc (# EYB-755, Boone County) $12

In the late 1990s Kentucky was sued by a photographer who claimed that the image of two horses that the state had been using on their plates since the mid-1980s was his. As a result of this lawsuit, for a short time newly-made Kentucky plates were in a plain design until new plates for a general reissue were made and issued. This is one of those uncommon, short-lived plain plates.

In 1980 Michigan introduced staggered-monthly registration and most vehicles jumped from 1979 to a 1981 expiration, making 1980 expirations uncommon.

Michigan 1983 1983 late issue, vvg (# 143-ZND) $12

In late 1982 Michigan ran out of numbers in the AAA-000 pattern and reversed to an 000-AAA pattern on their 1979 baseplate. However since this was also the numbering pattern of the new expire-1984 plates being introduced at the time, numbering began with the ZZZ combination and worked backwards. Since all of the 1979 baseplates were to be replaced by the end of 1983 there was no danger of the 1984 baseplates' numbering duplicating these late style 1979 baseplates.

Pair? A pair of Mississippi plates? From 2001?
Not possible - Mississippi has not issued pairs since 1924!

Sometimes extra plates are made in error. Three of a kind when there is supposed to be only a pair, or two of a kind from a state that issues singles. That is what this is. Mississippi has issued singles since 1925 but this is a matched pair from their 1998/2003 base. One was issued and the other held back. How they were reunited is unknown, but here they are - a pair of 2001 Mississippi!

Numbering on the non-reflectorized plates jumped around a bit but the general range was from the BLK to DBX letter combinations, then again from DVH to DVN. Approximately 660,000 plates were made unreflectorized.

In July 1973 there was a riot and fire at the prison where Oklahoma's 1974 plates were being made. Most of the already-made 1974 plates were destroyed. This is why Oklahoma issued a sticker in 1974, to revalidate the 1973 plates.
During 1974 some counties ran out of stock and the state had more plates made by a contractor in Arkansas. These plates had different dies than the usual Oklahoma 1973/74 plates.

2017 was the last year Pennsylvania used stickers.

Pennsylvania 1982 1982 with "type 1" sticker, vg (# 5N4-533) $7

Pennsylvania introduced staggered-monthly registration in 1980. Their stickers' design included a very tiny year in the upper-right corner and a large, three-letter month abbreviation in the center. Foolishly they made their 1982 stickers the same color as their 1980 stickers and since they alternated the corners that the stickers went in, the 1982 sticker was supposed to be placed over the 1980 sticker. Thus from a distance of a few feet one could not tell if a plate was valid or not because the stickers looked identical.

To solve this problem Pennsylvania changed their stickers to have a large, numberic month and year. So instead of a large "NOV" and tiny year that could only be read from inches away, the newer stickers would read "11-83", for example.

This change occurred mid-year in 1981 on the expire-1982 stickers. For 1982 January through August expirations had the old-style (type 1) stickers and for September through December expirations had the new style (type 2) stickers.
This particular plate has the last month of the "old" style sticker, August 1982. A September 1982 expiration would have had a sticker reading "9-82".

Late in the run of their 1975/77 plate at least one county in Wyoming needed more stock. Since production of the upcoming 1978 plates had already begun, these late-manufacture plates were made with the beveled edge of the 1978 plates rather than having an embossed border as the original 1975 plates had had.

Presently this variety is only known from Carbon County (county 6).
